The Maldives is home to many species of smaller sharks that can often be seen on the local reefs. The most common sharks sighted are Whitetip Reef Sharks, Leopard Sharks and Grey Reef Sharks. Whitetips tend to be more active at night and are often curious of snorkelers and SCUBA divers. Leopard Sharks are a ‘sleeping’ shark; often sightings of them are when they are sleeping in caves and under coral overhangs. Grey Reef Sharks are the largest shark in our waters, reaching lengths of 2m. They are normally seen in deeper, cooler water and are timid towards human interaction.
